TL;DR
There are two ways to see how much AI traffic your site is actually getting. One involves setup and ongoing maintenance, and still only shows you part of the picture. The other takes 30 seconds and shows you three.
Here’s the honest comparison.
Option 1: Build it yourself in GA4
You can absolutely track AI referrals manually. It’s well documented, and we’ve covered exactly how to do it in this bigger guide. The steps are a bit finnicky, but it’s not impossible.
You can also pay attention to the ‘AI assistant’ source. It works. But, it also comes with three catches most people don’t find consider:
➡️ It only catches referrals with the header intact. The moment a platform strips that header – which happens on the majority of AI-referred visits – the session lands in Direct regardless of how well your channel group is configured. You’ve built a filter that only sees roughly 30% of what you’re trying to measure.
➡️ It needs maintenance. New AI platforms launch constantly. Miss one in your regex and your “AI referrals” channel quietly under-reports from the day it’s created, with no warning that it’s happening.
➡️ It’s one metric, not three. Even a perfectly configured channel group tells you about referral traffic alone. It says nothing about the branded search lift AI recommendations generate, or the dark traffic sitting in your Direct channel that a referral-based view will never touch.
Option 2: Our dashboard, set up in 30 seconds
We built a free dashboard that does all of the above automatically, plus more. No new subscriptions, no code, no agency retainer.
Setup takes four steps:
- Grab the dashboard. Download it here – it’s free, no account needed.
- Open it in DataStudio.
- Connect your GA4 property and Search Console profile from the dropdowns at the top of the report.
- Add your brand terms in the branded search section – then you’re live.
That’s it. No regex to maintain, no channel group to rebuild every quarter, no spreadsheet stitching three exports together by hand.
What you actually see, side by side
| Manual GA4 setup | Our dashboard | |
| AI referral traffic | ✅ | ✅ |
| Branded search trend | Separate manual export | ✅ |
| Dark traffic (homepage-excluded direct) | Requires a custom segment | ✅ |
| Setup time | Long | About 30 seconds |
| Catches referrer-stripped visits | ❌ | Correlates against the two signals that do |
The manual route gets you one honest metric. The dashboard gets you three, in one view, updating automatically – which is the only way to catch the traffic a referral-only setup structurally cannot see.
Why three metrics beat one
This isn’t about replacing GA4 – it’s about not relying on it alone. AI referrals miss the majority of sessions by design. Branded search is a useful signal, but on its own it can be explained by ten other things – a PR push, a strong quarter, a social post that landed. Direct traffic catches everything and explains nothing.
Line all three up and something changes. When AI referrals rise, branded search rises, and non-homepage direct traffic rises in the same window – with nothing else to explain it – that’s a pattern you can actually act on. One metric alone is a guess. Three moving together is a trend line worth trusting.

If you’ve read our guides on what dark traffic actually is or seen what our survey of 171 marketers found, you already know the manual approach only shows you a fraction of what’s happening. The fastest way to see the rest isn’t more setup – it’s a dashboard that’s already built.
Free to use. Thirty seconds to set up. Three metrics your GA4 alone will never show you.
